Sidda sketch-low resIn this piece, historian and buttermilk aficionado Ramachandra Guha describes how he stumbled across Siddalingaiah’s autobiography A Word with You, World, thanks to a rum/coffee conversation with late D.R. Nagaraj, the Sahitya Academi Award winning Kannadiga writer. Guha is mightily impressed by the warmth with which Siddalingaiah incubates details; the clarity with which he examines politics—in particular caste politics; and, most of all, the humour with which he manages to illuminate everything.

In this world of dialectical pranksters, can Siddalingaiah’s poetry be the synthesis, the third term combining the feeling of rum with the judgment of coffee?
