Two years post its publication, Against the Madness of Manu introduced by Sharmila Rege continues to be a trailblazer.
Streekaal, a feminst journal in Hindi has decided to posthumously award her the Savitribai Phule Idealogue Award for the book despite it not being translated into Hindi. Noting the abyssmal lack of feminist publications in Hindi that are provoking and complex, they have taken on the responsibility of translating Rege’s book to make it eligible for the award. The reviewing panel stated, “This has been a lapse of Hindi and not of Sharmila Rege”.
Despite her short life, Rege’s scholarship was immense and ambitious, consistently complicating caste and gender and shunning an easy resolution. Bringing her book to a Hindi readership is perhaps an important first step in showing how it is crucial for feminism today to engage with caste.
