Forward Press was in the news recently when it came under right-wing attack for its October 2014 special issue devoted to ‘Bahujan-Shraman tradition’. For the crime of commemorating ‘Mahishasur Martyrdom Day’ the magazine’s office was attacked and an FIR was filed.

On this occasion, the second Mahatma Jotiba and Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule Balijan Ratna awards will be conferred on Braj Ranjan Mani, A.R. Akela (singer and writer) and Dr Hiralal Alawa (founder, Jai Adivasi Yuva Shakti).

In a related development, Roy, who last year wrote a comprehensive introduction, “The Doctor and  the Saint”, to the annotated, critical edition of B.R. Ambedkar’s Annihilation of Caste, is being conferred the “Ambedkar Sudar” (Flame of Ambedkar) award by the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi in Chennai on 2 May 2015. According to Thol. Thirumavalavan, president of VCK, Roy has “accepted Ambedkar’s ideas and has propagated them”. In May 2014, Roy  was conferred the Mahatma Jotiba Phule–Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Samata Ratna award in Yavatmal, Maharashtra.
